Alpha Crypt Virus – Removal Instructions
Alpha Crypt is a variant of virus called ransomware. Currently, Alpha Crypt is capable of affecting a wide variety of Windows operating system versions including XP, Vista, 7, and 8. Ransomware programs, such as Alpha Crypt, are becoming more common because virus authors are beginning to sell them in “kits.” For a large sum, such as $3,000 USD, a cyber criminal can purchase a ransomware virus creation kit and quickly set it in motion. Like many other variants of ransomware, Alpha Crypt begins infecting a computer by scanning it for files and encrypting them so that they can’t be accessed without a decryption key.
Files that have been encrypted by a newer version of the Alpha Crypt virus have a random file extension assigned to them. In the past, encrypted files were given ZZ 78 or ZZ78 file extensions. Once a machine’s file system has been completely encrypted, a text file is then displayed on the screen for the user. In essence, the text file demands payment for decryption of the files. The text file urges the user to submit a payment of .2 Bitcoins. Currently, this is roughly the equivalent of $120 USD.
Alpha Crypt begins its infection by scanning any and all letter drives in the computer for data to encrypt. The infection will also snoop in places such as your network shared drives, removable media, and mapped drives. Simply put, if there’s a place or drive letter on your computer where data is stored, Alpha Crypt will scan it. Alpha Crypt uses a unique type of encryption known as “elliptical curve cryptography.” This type of encryption is unique to Alpha Crypt. Once scanning and encryption complete, a text file is displayed demanding payment for decryption, and the user’s background photo is changed by the infection.
Newer versions of the Alpha Crypt ransomware variant offer the user a free trial decryption of five files in order to prove that decryption is possible. At this time, it appears that the files are randomly selected by Alpha Crypt for decryption. In other words, you cannot salvage the files that you want from the encryption infection. The trial decryption is just a method to prove that it’s possible to redeem your files. Regardless of the ransom warnings and messages, it is highly advised that you do not wire or submit payment for decryption of your files.
