Asterope Locker Virus – Removal Instructions
Asterope Locker is a computer virus that has been classified as a trojan and ransomware. Asterope Locker is primarily spread through infected email attachments, but can also spread through other methods, such as by being bound with another executable file that is made available for download through the web. As a virus belonging to the category of ransomware, Asterope Locker‘s primary purpose is to get the person that owns the infected computer to send money to the creators of the virus. It does so by encrypting certain files on the infected computer’s hard drive or on network resources. Asterope Locker will encrypt certain files, such as Microsoft Word documents and JPEG image files with an encryption key that has been obtained from a remote server run by the creators of the virus or their associates.
In order to regain access to their files, infected PC users are instructed to transfer several hundreds of dollars through relatively anonymous payment methods, such as webmoney within a certain period of time. Asterope Locker affects computers running various versions of the Windows operating system. It is unable to infect computers that run other platforms, like OS X and Linux, or mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets that run mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android.
Asterope Locker works in a way that is similar to other trojans when it first infects a user’s computer. Asterope Locker will install a copy of itself in the Windows user profile folder, then add a registry key that makes the trojan executable file run each time the computer boots up. Asterope Locker then attempts to connect to a remote server that is believed to be found on a botnet. If Asterope Locker is able to successfully connect to a remote server that controls the virus, a 2048-bit RSA key pair will be generated, with the private key being stored on the remote server and the public key is sent to the infected computer.
Asterope Locker will next scan local hard drives and connected network drives for files with certain extensions, like Word and Excel documents, then encrypt the files with the private key and log each file in the Windows registry. The virus will display a message to the user informing them that their files were encrypted and demanding payment of $300 through webmoney within 72 hours, otherwise the private keys will be destroyed and the files would be rendered permanently inaccessible. If payment is made, the files would normally be decrypted.
