CryptoFortress Virus – Removal Instructions
CryptoFortress, as described by Bleeping Computer, is a new destructive encrypting ransomware that “locks” your files like other encrypting ransomware out there. Once infected with CryptoFortress, The only way to retrieve your files is by paying these smart, get-rich-quick- malware developers the bitcoins that they want. How? Once the virus spreads, it displays a message on the screen. Afterwards, CryptoFortress will pretend to help you by offering tools and steps. CryptoFortress will tell you to buy a license with 100% guarantee of getting your files back.
They will even lure you to buy soon because the promo offer expires in a couple of days. Of course, CryptoFortress accepts bitcoin as the only type of payment just like other ransomware viruses. CryptoFortress does not only keep an eye on data files, but on ALL files saved on your C:/drive. The little good news is that CryptoFortress does not attack files that are more than 20 MegaBytes.
The folders that will be spared from this “deadly” computer attack are those that have the words Windows, WINDOWS, Desktop, CryptoFortress, and Program Files. All other files that are harmed will then be encrypted or “locked.” After the encryption, everything encrypted will be renamed and overwritten on the C:/drive. All the files will no longer be available for use anymore. A new file will be created named as C:/CryptoFortress.
The CryptoFortress virus is really creepy, because it even renames the main hard drive of the computer. This happens when the private key was uploaded and other certain things done. This step further disables the user the restoring all his files because the decryption key or “unlock” key wasn’t stored anywhere in the computer. However, in the end, it is great to know that CryptoFortress does not delete the Windows System Restore Points, which means there is hope to retrieve the files.
