Cryptolocker Virus – Removal Instructions
Cryptolocker is a form of ransomware that is designed to encrypt files on a victim’s computer. Once this has been done, the software demands a ransom in exchange for decryption of the files on the computer. Common file extensions that the virus searches for an encrypts are DOC, DOCX, DWG, RTF, JPG, PSD, AI, and more. Any file that could possibly be of importance to user is likely to be encrypted in the process. A computer can be infected with the Cryptolocker virus in a number of ways. For example, a user might open an email that appears to have originated from a legitimate source, such as shipping companies, UPS or DHL. The emails urge the user to download an attachment that is described to contain more information regarding an important shipment.
Once the attachment is downloaded and opened, the computer is infected with the virus. Cryptolocker can also be contracted on a computer by being downloaded from a website. While a user visits a website, the virus could be downloading in the background without he/she ever knowing. Likewise, it is not uncommon that ransomware viruses come bundled in suspicious software downloads, such as bogus free software or torrents. Once these files are downloaded, opened (and possibly installed), the virus is installed along with it.
Once a computer has been infected with Cryptolocker, the user is immediately presented with a red message. The title of the message is, “Your personal files are encrypted!” The message goes on to tell the user that all of their files have been encrypted, and the only way to decrypt them is to purchase a “private key.” The private key is to described to be kept on a “secret server” online, and the user is given 72 hours to purchase it before their files stay encrypted forever. The amount that is typically demanded for ransom ranges anywhere from $100 to $300. It can be paid via Moneypak vouchers or Bitcoins. Lastly, the message is generally concluded with a warning that states that it is unwise to try to remove or damage Cryptolocker.
The virus warns that if the user tries to manipulate or remove it, it will then be impossible to purchase the private key. Understand that this message and the virus itself generates from cyber criminals. It is, in no way, a legitimate message from any sort of reputable source. After all, what reputable or respectable source would encrypt your files at random and demand a payment for their decryption? It is strongly advised that you do not try to purchase the key or wire any money to the individuals that created Cryptolocker. There is no guarantee that you will receive a decryption key in exchange for your payment, and even if you do, it is still not guaranteed that all of your files will be returned to their normal states. Do not pay the cyber criminals any sort of ransom, and never try to decrypt the files yourself.
