Locky Virus – Removal Instructions
Locky is a type of virus known as ransomware. Ransomware is a type of infection that infects a computer and restricts access to certain files or folders. The creator of Locky demands that you pay a ransom in order to regain access to your files. The virus gets on the computer by the user visiting a website that has been compromised and redirects them to an exploit that allows it to get on the system. The popularity of ransomware like Locky has grown significantly in the past two weeks, particularly overseas. This type of virus is able to exploit millions of dollars from computer users every year because the individuals don’t know that they do not have to pay the ransom to regain access to their files.
Then, they get scared thinking that they’re going to lose everything if they don’t immediately pay up. The warning messages that pop up in systems infected with the ransomware often mimic law enforcement agencies and state illegal activity has been detected on the system. Online payment systems such Bitcoin are the preferred method of payment.
Locky copies files to specific folders on the computer through an exploit in Adobe Flash. Once the computer is infected, a message will pop up that says your personal files are encrypted and lists how much time is left until the private “key” is destroyed. This ransomware virus attacks all computer files and has infected computers through fake emails with pdf and doc attachments – among others. The creators of Locky play on the addictive qualities of video gamers that don’t want to stop playing or lose their important game data. It also infects system files that make it very difficult for the average user to remove.
The creators of Locky demand that victims pay $1,000 through Bitcoin, which is cheaper because it is more difficult for law enforcement agencies to track and the significant discount through Bitcoin persuades users to use PayPal only if absolutely necessary. Locky and similar ransomware applications don’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, so it is crucial that you keep your system secure at all times and don’t download or install anything that you don’t completely trust. Prevention is the key to keeping yourself safe from all viruses and malware of all types, including Locky.
