TeslaCrypt Virus – Removal Instructions
TeslaCrypt is a ransomware virus, which is a type of malware program that uses coercion by blocking users’ access to their files, then requires them to pay in order to unlock them. These programs may display a popup stating that the user will be reported to the FBI for illegal activity if money is not sent, or that the files can’t be unlocked without purchasing a key. However, a new ransomware variant on the scene, TeslaCrypt, uses a less direct approach to scamming unsuspecting computer users. Rather than coercing users into paying, the malware pretends to be beneficial. It claims that it will help you unlock files that have been secured with a supposedly unbreakable encryption method. In reality, TeslaCrypt itself has encrypted the files during the last computer startup and is now demanding money for their release.
The TeslaCrypt popup states that affected users can purchase a license for an introductory price of $300 USD. This price increases to $600 USD after five days, and $1,000 USD after ten days. The popup also says that payment is only accepted via bitcoin. This payment method leaves no paper trail, and victims would have no financial recourse, such as chargebacks.
TeslaCrypt preys on the trouble that has been caused by many similar ransomware programs recently. When users are unable to gain access to their own files and see no other solution, an unwary handful may believe that paying TeslaCrypt is the best course of action. This is an easy trap to fall into. However, it’s important to stop and think about a few important things when confronted with TeslaCrypt‘s claims. How did the files become encrypted, and how did TeslaCrypt even get on the machine in the first place? These two considerations will instantly point to fraudulent activity on the part of TeslaCrypt.
In cases where ransomware has locked down a computer’s files, the only way to restore access to them is if you have a backup copy on disc. TeslaCrypt can be dealt with, but as with any computer virus, prevention is better than a cure. Always take steps to minimize your risk of infection. Make sure that all software is up to date, especially your antivirus program. Ensure that your antivirus provides scanning in real-time, and always use it to scan new files. While browsing the Internet, avoid any unscrupulous website or links, and never download any files you’re not absolutely certain of.
