Windows Web Shield Virus – Removal Instructions

Windows Web Shield is a program that infects your computer and masquerades as a piece of antivirus software. It is a virus, one from the base family tree of malware infections known as Rogue.FakeVimes. This virus is often found bundled maliciously with other software or downloads. It installs itself in the background while you install the bundled program, possibly with a check box convincing you to install it willingly. It is occasionally downloaded as part of a malware package along with other infections. The Windows Web Shield virus is often found on hacked websites, where it is promoted as a legitimate piece of software using scare tactics to convince you it has detected other infections on your computer.

The virus, once installed, opens when Windows starts each time you boot your computer. Windows Web Shield is classified as a rogue program and as scareware, because of the tactics and behavior it uses to trick users into installing and using the software. It is not a legitimate antivirus program, and in fact may open the door to other malware infections. The program is difficult to remove, as it protects itself in a number of ways.

What does Windows Web Shield do, exactly? The virus pretends to be a legitimate piece of antivirus software. It will pop up windows claiming to scan your computer, saying that it has located malicious software. The infections it locates are not real and can be safely ignored. Windows Web Shield will claim that the only way to remove the infections it finds is to pay the creators of the program for a full version of the software. This is a steep fee, generally $99, and is only used to steal your money and personal information. In order to protect itself from removal, Windows Web Shield will disable your existing antivirus and firewall applications. It installs itself to autorun upon booting your computer, where it will initiate further scare scans. It will also disable your ability to install and run other programs that may be used to remove it, including most other malware removal tools.

The virus will also often install itself in multiple locations, making removal a difficult process. If individual segments are left behind when most of the virus is removed, they will rebuild the virus upon your next boot. Completely removing the virus often requires booting your computer into safe mode and using specialized anti-malware tools that will detect Windows Web Shield and any other infections it has allowed onto your computer while it is unsecured. Under no circumstances should you believe the warnings produced by Windows Web Shield, or input any information into any of its prompts, unless otherwise specified by a malware removal tool.
